How Shall I Learn?, is a duet for soprano and baritone, with piano, which sets Gordon Getty’s early poem “Sonnet.” In the text, the author celebrates the artistic eye of the great poets and humbly – but joyfully – hopes to glean wisdom and inspiration from their vision. Commissioned for the 2025 Festival Napa Valley, I composed this piece for the rich operatic voices of Alexandra Armantrading and Lester Lynch, and the nuanced virtuosity of pianist Kevin Korth. Having written for each of these extraordinary musicians in the past, I was moved by the idea of bringing them together, and marrying the powerful sound of the voices in a closely hewed duet. At times we hear the two voices moving in lock-step, at others they play gently off each other, trading fugal motives. Together with the pointillistic and expressive piano, the ensemble embodies the curiosity, revelation, and devotion to art explored by the young poet in his text.
