From the composer:
Lalaei (“lullaby” in Persian) was commissioned by Megan Ihnen as part of her recording project of miniature works for unaccompanied solo mezzo-soprano voice. I wrote this lullaby for voice and electronics inspired by a very well known soundtrack from Turtles Can Fly, composed by Hossein Alizadeh. The vocal quality that I imagined for this piece is an intimate voice that is both soothing and aching in lamentation.
Premiere: First performed April 26, 2024 as part of the Emruz Festival the National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY by vocalist Mehry Eslaminia.
