From the composer:

Angel Heart was created as a story told in music to bring together a collection of folk songs, melodies and lullabies from far and wide. The project was conceived and developed together with soprano Lisa Delan. Cornelia Funke created the original story to be narrated in concert with an all cello ensemble led by Matt Haimovitz. In the staged performances and recordings – narrated in English (by Jeremy Irons) and German (by Cornelia Funke) – the songs are heard between each chapter of the story, and serve as a musical expansion, or illustration of each moment in the story. 

The complete production has been performed at Carnegie Hall, Cal performances and Festival Napa Valley. Angel Heart has been performed as a stand-alone work in Berlin, Montreal and New York City.
